7 Lash Extension Myths, Debunked by an Expert

What clients hear vs. what's actually true.

After 7+ years in the lash industry and training with top academies across the world, I've heard every misconception there is. Some are outdated. Some were never true. And a few are costing you the lash experience you actually deserve. Let's clear them up.

MYTH 01

"Lash extensions damage your natural lashes."

FALSE

This is the biggest myth in the industry, and it keeps people from trying extensions altogether.

When lash extensions are applied correctly with the right weight, length, and curl for your natural lash, there should be zero damage. T
he keyword is proper application and lash selection.

An extension that's too heavy or too long for your natural lash will absolutely cause stress over time. But that's not an extension problem. That's a technique problem.

Many lash wearers have been getting lash extensions continuously for years with no damage to their natural lashes. When you see extensions falling out, that's your natural lash cycle. Your lashes shed naturally every 6 to 8 weeks, and the extension goes with it. That's shedding, not damage.

MYTH 02

"Pain or burning during application is normal."

FALSE

If you've ever felt stinging, burning, or watering eyes during a lash appointment, something was wrong. Either the adhesive fumes were reaching your eyes because the pads or tape shifted, or the application technique was causing irritation.

If you feel any burning during your appointment, tell your technician right away. That means fumes are getting into your eyes and it needs to be corrected immediately. Keeping your eyes closed during the entire appointment isn't optional. It's essential to preventing fume exposure.

A properly done lash appointment should be completely painless. Most of our clients fall asleep during their appointment. If your eyes are burning, that's a red flag, not a rite of passage.

This is also one of the reasons we offer LED-cured bonding. The adhesive cures instantly under LED light, which means significantly fewer fumes and virtually zero irritation during the appointment.

MYTH 03

"Washing your lashes makes them fall out."

FALSE

This one actually causes more harm than the myth itself. Clients who avoid washing their lashes end up with buildup of oils, dead skin, makeup residue, and even bacteria along the lash line. That buildup is what weakens the adhesive bond and causes premature fallout.

Not washing your lashes is one of the top reasons they don't last.

You should be gently cleansing your lashes daily with a lash-safe cleanser. On top of that, eye rubbing and hard water buildup are two other major culprits that most people don't think about. If you live in an area with hard water, it's worth investing in a faucet filter or chelating lash shampoo. It makes a noticeable difference in retention.

MYTH 04

"You need to wait 24 hours before getting your lashes wet."

OUTDATED

This used to be true. Years ago, lash adhesives took much longer to fully cure, so getting them wet too soon could compromise the bond.

Modern lash products have changed that. With the use of a bonder, the adhesive cures almost immediately after application. That means you can wash your lashes right after your appointment. No waiting 24 hours, no avoiding steam, no sleeping in a specific position to protect them.

If your lash artist is still telling you to wait a full day before getting them wet, they may not be using current products or techniques.

MYTH 05

"Special styles like anime or strip lash looks don't last."

MISLEADING

The style of your lashes doesn't determine how long they last. Retention comes down to the adhesive, the application technique, and your aftercare. A well-applied anime set or strip lash style should last just as long as a classic or volume set.

The confusion usually comes from artists who aren't comfortable with specialty styling and default to telling clients those looks are "harder to maintain." A more accurate statement would be that those styles require more skill to apply correctly.

If you want a specific look, find an artist who specializes in it. Your retention should be good regardless of the style.

MYTH 06

"If you have oily skin, your lashes won't last."

MISLEADING

Oily skin can affect retention, but it's not the dealbreaker people make it out to be. If your lash artist tells you "it's your skin type" as an explanation for poor retention, that's an incomplete answer at best.

Proper prep work before application makes a significant difference. Thorough cleansing and priming the lashes to remove oils before bonding is essential. The right adhesive choice matters too. And with LED-cured bonding, the adhesive cures instantly rather than relying on moisture in the air, which means oil has less opportunity to interfere with the bond.

Oily skin is a factor. It's not an excuse for lashes that don't last.

MYTH 07

"Longer, fuller lashes make your eyes look more open."

NOT ALWAYS

This is one of the most common requests and one of the biggest misconceptions. Longer and fuller doesn't automatically mean more open and awake. In many cases, it actually does the opposite.

Extensions that are too long or too heavy can weigh the lash line down, making the eyes look droopy or half-closed. The goal should be choosing a length, curl, and placement that complements your specific eye shape, not just going as big as possible.

The right lash map for your eye shape will always look better than maximum length. That's why a consultation matters. A good lash artist will assess your eye shape, your natural lash strength, and your desired look before deciding on a style. More isn't always more.
